| The U.S. Green Building Council selected this project
for its LEED-CI pilot program after the client made
the daring decision to attempt certification and enlisted
Ms. Blake-Drucker to take on the challenge. Incorporating
energy saving design, strict emission controls and strong
access to daylight, it became the first lab renovation
in the country to earn LEED certification.
Ms. Blake-Drucker’s hands-on attention during
construction was key, keeping a strict watch on all
materials brought to site and confirming use of only
specified low VOC and recycled materials. Extensive
daylighting and innovative integration of recycling
areas were augmented by energy savings that exceed California
Title 24 standards by 32 percent and total $80,000 savings
per year. Green features also include 75 percent of
construction waste diverted from landfill, water consumption
reduced by 14 percent, and high recycled content materials
and furnishings that are also low-VOC and formaldehyde-free.
