In 1986, Blake-Drucker / Kay Architects was selected to upgrade the Reading Room and Library for the Department of Social Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley. Located in the historic Haviland Hall, the room features a 1920's John Galen Howard ceiling. Uplighting was used to bring out the character of this ceiling while creating a glare-free reading environment at the study tables. Careful zoning of circulation, informal seating, an quiet study spaces led to this room being voted "The best study room on Campus."
The project was completed on time, and on a stringent budget. It was featured on the cover of "California Monthly" February 1987.
