The Americans with Disabilities Act is the law, but it has been the commitment of the University of California, Berkeley to institute this law into every aspect of practice. BlakeDrucker Architects assisted in this process by designing a universally-accessible chemical fume hood.
This fume hood and workstation is fully adjustable, with a hydraulic lift that can raise or lower the entire worksurface at the touch of a button. This allows the hood to be utilized by a person with disability without being uncomfortable (thus hazardous) to a standing able-bodied user.
The Accessible fume hood is equipped with an integral sink, which moves along with the worksurface, braille labels on all controls, a textured steam valve (the potentially hazardous valve), and both auditory and visual low flow alarms.
The accessible fume hood was instituted at UC Berkeley in the Spring of 1995, and is still in use, allowing all students equal opportunities to the sciences.
BlakeDrucker Architects was recognized by the National Endowment of the Arts for Excellence in Universal Design for the design of this fume hood.
